Hi faithful Honduras readers! This is Kristen writing. Various people on staff have been in touch with the team at camp and have told me some new info to post.
On Saturday, half the Blackhawk team went with some people from camp on a scheduled camping trip. Kike is the camp director and was leading the hike; he's sort of like their version of Jon Anderson... with hair. One of the common camp team building exercises includes rappelling down a waterfall, which all went great. It started to rain unexpectedly, so they stopped for safety reasons. Those that had already gone down the waterfall climbed back up the path to the top, which is where the rest of the group was waiting.
On the way up, Hannah Fricke (rising sophomore) slipped and tumbled. Kike was behind her and broke her fall.
Hannah's leg twisted and her femur (the big thigh bone) was fractured. She also hit her head.
When they got back to camp, Jon rode with Hannah to the hospital, and she has been in really great spirits. She got some stitches on her head, and she needs surgery to fix her leg. She hasn't been in much pain (other than when they reset her leg). While at the hospital, Hannah said things like, "It's so exciting to be on an adventure! I know that pain is normally a part that makes something an adventure." Gotta love the resiliency of teenagers!
The other students have been amazing. Even before this accident, they have been praying more on this trip than on any other, which has been bonding them together as a team. They feel very close. The group has been taking a lot of time to process what happened, and they have been acknowledging that this is what it means to do missions -- it involves some risks outside of everyday life.
Jen Bagley (one of the other adults on the trip) spent the night with Hannah at the hospital.
Kike broke his clavicle (collar bone) and a rib, and his face had some stitches and is swollen.
Hannah will be transported back to the States for her leg surgery. Right now, she is en route to Florida on a medical evacuation flight. Our main missionary in Honduras is Ken, and his wife Sue is accompanying Hannah to Florida. Also, Hannah's mom, Carol, is en route to Florida.
The other half of the group was scheduled to go on the camping trip tonight, but instead everyone is going to stay at the camp to help with other preparations. (Plus, it has been raining a lot.)
What can ya do? Pray.
--Pray for Hannah, particularly her air transport, surgery and recovery.
--Pray for Kike, particularly his recovery (both physically and emotionally).
--Pray for Hannah's family, particularly her mom and grandparents who will see her soon yet probably after surgery.
--Pray for camp. This is a lot for the permanent camp staff to process because nothing like this has ever happened. Already the plan has started to shift (with no camping trip tonight), which can be discouraging to students.
The team will certainly continue processing these events. They are encouraged by Hannah's attitude. Her biggest complaint is that she won't be coming back after her surgery like she wants. That has certainly helped give us perspective on her optimism!
The team would love to hear some encouragement, so please leave fun comments!

Wow! What an adventure! FYI, I was praying this morning that the way all of you handled this situation would be a great witness in itself, and it sounds like God has already answered that prayer! Way to go guys! Don't forget God takes all things and uses them for good for those who are in Him. Hannah, you are an amazing, funny, great example - keep up the awesome attitude! We'll be praying for Hannah, Kike, and all of you there.
ReplyDeleteAs Joshua would say in our family "Its an adventure!" Stepping out in faith is never boring! I was so blessed to read how you are rallying around prayer and each other. What a team! It will be so great to hear all your faith stories.
ReplyDeleteI sure miss you Joshua and Hannah. The house is very quiet without you. I pray God is using your special gifts to be the hands and feet of Christ to your team and camp. I love you!
What an adventure to say the least. How fitting the sermon today was about life going along smoothly until it doesn't. Puts everything in perspective. You teenagers are amazing in your love for each other and faith in God. It makes me so proud to hear of how you have come together in prayer and friendship. Only 3 days in and you all have been changed forever, just think of what still awaits you. Bless you as you continue on this great experience. Hold each other up, love on each other and remember God is in control whether we understand it or not. Prayers for you. Jackson's mom.
ReplyDeleteHi team
ReplyDeleteHow brave you all are to go to Honduras and serve where needed and to be praying and bonding like it sounds you are. We are keeping you in our prayers, conitnue to press on and have great rest of the week
Hey Honduras Team-You guys are amazing. You definately are on a BIG adventure and God is with you guys. Keep up the amazing attitudes. You have hundreds of people praying for you. Tom and I definately are. I know that God will continue to use you guys and will be with you every step of the way. We love you. PS Hannah and Kike YOU ROCK!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHello Honduras Team...this is Hannah's mom!
ReplyDeleteI want you all to know that Hannah is going to be well taken care of. The hardest thing will be convincing her she can't jump on a plane to join you all after her surgery. :) Thank you for your prayers and friendship during a difficult time. Remember, this could have been so much worse and I have already seen God's hand in this process. He is good, and still in control, and we can trust Him though this. I know Hannah would want all of you to go on as planned and to have a fantastic time! My one request...bring fun colored sharpies to the celebrating time next Thursday so you can make her cast look extra fun. Hannah LOVES sharpies! May the rest of your trip be uneventful (in a good way) and may this experience bring you all even closer together. Please tell Kike how much I appreciate what he did and that I'm praying for his healing as well! Take care and enjoy the rest of your journey!
Blessings,
Carol, Mrs. Fricke, Hannah's mom...
I'm very proud of all of you. I would have been too scared to do something like this when I was your age. Praise God for how awesome you guys are and how much you're growing in Him in this short time span!
ReplyDeleteWe are so proud of each one of you! What you have experienced in the last 3 days has been amazing. Our God is forever faithful and has not let any of you out of his hands. We will continue to pray for the team, Hannah and for Kike.
ReplyDeleteHanna, I would love to give you a hug right now and reassure you that everything will be ok. (would one of you do it for me?!) Hannah has many many people working hard to make sure of it.
Love each other and support each other and keep praying together!
You are loved and missed!!!
Hanna's Mom
Oh boy what a roller coaster of a few days you have all had! We feel terrible that this happened to Hannah and Kike, but are so grateful that it was not worse and that God's hand is so clearly seen in all this!
ReplyDeleteHannah...I love you. :) You are like a second daughter to me and I wish I could be with you in that hospital right now. I am thinking that this is WAY more interesting and adventurous than one of your zany dreams! Stay close to the Lord, Hannah, He will carry you through this.
Jon and leaders...we love you too! ;-) Just know that I hope you are all doing ok and know that we know you will continue this great mission with the rest of our children. I trust you totally and am praying for you.
My Taylor, Tia...Love ya stinkerbell! Hope you are holding up ok and keeping that chin high. Write tons in your journal so you can share this experience with Hannah when you return. (((HUGS))) Love you always and all ways.
Wow! We are so impressed with all the reports of how well everyone (Hannah, leaders, all of the students, *everyone*!) has handled such a difficult event. This is one of those situations that you will always remember and we are thankful that you all are handling it with prayer, grace, and optimism. We will continue to pray for Hannah, her family, Kike, and all of the rest of you. We are sure that God is in complete control and that you all are making wise choices.
ReplyDeleteKatherine-- Tom's birthday was great! We gave him your note and he was very pleased. He got a new orange bike and has been riding it all over the neighborhood! We love you and miss you and know that you are exactly where you should be!
Love to all-- GREAT JOB!!!
Hi to Jackson Middleton from Grandma Penny and Grandpa Rick in Dubuque. What a day this has been for you following Hannah and Kiki's accident- so much anxiety. After your visit to the people living in a dump I'm sure you already realize that there are worse things to encounter in life than a broken leg. Take your cue from Hannah and keep your spirits high as you your team continue your mission journey.
ReplyDeleteI'm completely confident that this great mission team the Lord has put together (Honduran and Madisonian) will distinguish itself with a great attitude (even if Jed and some of the other adventurous types miss the repelling adventure).
ReplyDeleteYou'll discover great things about yourself, about the strong bond of love between friends, about how God can use people who rely on Him.
You will learn just how much you really loved Culvers; How great your own bed and private room in your family's house is; How absolutely fantastic those dumb meatloaf dinners that dad presents every once n' awhile are... (O.K.,O.K. now I've gone too far.)
We will continue to pray for Hannah and family, and Kike and staff, kids who are mission warriors with great attitudes.
Hi Kyra! Just wanted to let you know how much Dad and I miss you! Taylor went up to camp today and is all settled into a cabin with Kallie. She went up early with the Everson's to visit family that works at the camp, so they had time to go canoeing and name many of the animals at the mini-barn before anyone else arrived. The house is REALLY quiet, though Dad has been trying to make me miss you guys less - leaving a mess in the sink, dirty socks on the couch, putting an empty drink container back into the fridge...:)
ReplyDeleteLove you lots!
Mom
Hi Ben, Jackson, Jon, and the rest of the team. It sounds like the trip has already been a moving experience for all of you. I'm proud to hear that you are praying as a group and connecting with God and one another. I'm excited to hear about your further exploits. I'll continue to pray for all of you.
ReplyDeleteJon
What a great attitude everyone seems to be expressing! We are proud of all of you. The things that go 'right' in life we seldom remember (the day the sun was shining for a hike; the day the water was warm when we went swimming) but the things that go 'wrong' stay with us our whole life (that hike in the pouring rain; swimming in ice cold water)!
ReplyDeleteHannah's accident definitely falls into the 'making a lasting memory' category. Luckily Hannah is getting the best medical care, but you're learning that there are people who must endure much hardship in their everyday lives.
We are praying for Hannah's swift and complete recovery; giving a prayer of thanksgiving that injuries were not worse; and giving a Special Prayer for Kike - who seems to have sacrificed himself to ensure that Hannah's injury wasn't worse. Thank you Kike for your protection! And thank the Lord for his protection for all of you as you continue your exciting adventure!
Praying for peace in your hearts and continued opportunities to learn how huge our God's love is for each of you. Also praying that you will know God's voice as he speaks.
ReplyDeleteMelody Harrison Hanson (mother of two non-Honduras middle school students.)
Happy Birthday Taylor Evadeane....Hope you have a day that is as special as you are...We love you, Grandma and Grandpa Stevens
